Birthday Party Kicks Off Shoe Drive

Birthday parties for 11 year old little girls should be full of all the preteen gadgets on her wish list. Not so for Marquita Walker’s party on February 19th at Brunswick Thousand Oaks Bowl.

With a heart of giving back to her community, Marquita requested that no personal presents be brought. Instead shoes for disadvantaged kids in the East Central School District are purchased for a Shoe drive The Rotary Club of the Highlands is conducting.

So at her request all her friends brought shoes; shoes of all sizes, shapes and colors. Approximately 15 pairs where donated. Then on March 8th the drive was kicked off by presenting the birthday shoes to East Central Social Services, Representative Raquel Hernandez.

“These shoes will go a long way into helping our children of the district”, said Mrs. Hernandez. “It is sad that some children are not able to participate in recess class for lack of proper foot attire. Some will skip days of school because they have nothing to wear. Or they are wearing hand me down shoes that are several sizes too small.”

“This is a great start to what Rotary can do when we live and work our motto, Service above Self”, “said David Langwell, Rotary Club of the Highlands President.

If you would like to contribute shoes or make a monetary donation to the drive please call Sandy.

Mio Mio Me Likeo

So I found a new fun product. Mio Liquid Water Enhancer. Instead of packets you add to your water this is a liquid. All you do is squeeze however much you want into your water. And since it is a liquid you don't have to shake to get it to dissolve.

Carry it with you and at dinner when you order water (which I love) because the restaurants can't seem to understand that they are getting $0 for water because they charge $2 for tea. Squirt some in and there you have it.

If your traveling carry a bottle with you. Then when you taste the water and it sure doesn't taste like home. Well, give it a little squirt.

I saw it the other day at Walmart. Ran $3.50 for a bottle. It says it has 24 servings in it, but doesn't define what a serving is. But none the less it's worth a try. I loved it.

Overnight Oats

Overnight oats, sounds like something you would hang on your horses mouth for a midnight snack. Well close except no horse is involved. It's simple! and your healthy breakfast is prepared, and ready to grab as you run out the door. Use your favorite oat product, whole oats or steel cut. Place in container, and refrigerate over night.
Here is what I do. I like steel cut oats, healthier with have more substance to them.
1/3 cup oats
2/3 cup Silk unsweetened almond milk (or any Silk product)
Dollop of yogurt
cinammon (I love cinammon)
dash of vanilla
Place in refrigerator over night. In the morning add
1 sliced up banana
handful of chopped walnuts
sprinkle of Truvia
stir it up. Put lid on and go.
I did warm it up when I got to work
But cold is good.

This is my recipe, but there are many different combos. The skies the limit.
Basically it's double the liquid, to the oats. Just don't add anything the night before that you don't want to be soggy.
The difference between whole oats and quick oats is that quick oats are chopped up, so they cook faster. Use whole oats for this, quick oats turn into mush.
I try and do the steel oats earlier in the evening so they can soften up more since they are a more crunchy oat.

Silk Almond Milk. A great alternative to cows milk. Cholesterol free, contain as much calcium as dairy milk. Plus, Silk is a simple and all natural way to enjoy more plant based foods, which research suggests may have significant long-term health benefits. Also lower calorie and less sugar. Yes dairy milk contains sugar. Website with coupon http://silkpurealmond.com/
